Lesson: Work Is Eternal
Big Idea
Your work is not just about today’s paycheck — it has eternal impact. What you do, how you do it, and why you do it all matter forever.
1. You Are God’s Coworker
In 1 Corinthians 3:1–9, Paul explains:
Some plant.
Some water.
But God gives the growth.
We are “God’s fellow workers.”
This changes how we see our jobs. Every conversation, act of integrity, prayer, encouragement, correction, or example of humility is a seed planted. You may never see the harvest — but that doesn’t mean it isn’t growing.
Teaching Point:
Faithfulness at work is eternal, even when results are invisible.
2. Your Work Follows You
Revelation 14:13 says:
“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord… their works follow them.”
Work does not save us — Christ does.
But our works matter. They carry eternal weight.
Every day you are:
Building a reputation
Reflecting Christ (or not)
Forming habits of character
Influencing someone’s eternity
Nothing done for God is wasted.
Teaching Point:
Your daily obedience has eternal consequences.
3. Work Is Worship
In Romans 12:1–2, Paul urges believers to:
Offer themselves as living sacrifices
Refuse conformity to the world
Be transformed by renewing their minds
Work becomes eternal when it becomes worship.
When you:
Choose integrity over shortcuts
Serve instead of compete
Pray instead of panic
Forgive instead of retaliate
You are worshiping God through your labor.
Teaching Point:
Work is not separate from worship — it is an expression of it.
4. Humility Unlocks Eternal Impact
Jesus said in Matthew 18:3–4 that we must become like children — humble and dependent.
Approaching work like a child means:
Asking God for wisdom
Admitting you don’t control everything
Depending on the Holy Spirit
Trusting God’s economy over the world’s
Markets rise and fall. Titles come and go.
But God’s promises remain.
Teaching Point:
An eternal perspective requires childlike humility.
5. Prayer Makes Work Eternal
In 1 John 5:13–15, we are told that God hears us when we pray according to His will.
And 1 Timothy 2:1–6 urges us to pray for everyone.
Everyone means:
The coworker you struggle with
The leader you disagree with
The employee who frustrates you
The client who drains you
Why? Because Christ died for all.
When you pray at work:
You are participating in eternal outcomes.
You are aligning your heart with God’s desire for salvation.
You are investing beyond quarterly results.
Teaching Point:
Prayer turns ordinary work into eternal partnership with God.
6. Don’t Work Only for What Perishes
In John 6:27, Jesus says:
“Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life.”
Provision matters — God designed work for that.
But if money and status are the only goals, we miss the greater purpose.
Your career is:
A platform for influence
A field for harvest
A place to reflect Christ
A training ground for eternity
Teaching Point:
Kingdom-minded work outlasts earthly success.
7. There Is Work in Eternity
Scripture points to meaningful activity in the new heaven and new earth.
In Isaiah 65:17–25, we are told:
We will build and enjoy.
We will plant and eat.
We will not labor in vain.
Our work will be joyful and unbroken by sin.
Our best days here are only a preview.
Eternal life has already begun. The way you live and work now is preparation for what is coming.
Teaching Point:
Today’s faithfulness prepares you for tomorrow’s glory.
8. You Are Planted for Purpose
You are not where you are by accident.
Your job is not:
Random
Merely transactional
Only about survival
You are planted there for eternal purpose.
God has been patient with you. He has shaped you through:
Failure
Success
Discipline
Mercy
Provision
Now He invites you to see work through a missional lens.
Final Takeaway:
Work is eternal because:
People are eternal.
Prayer is eternal.
Influence is eternal.
Character is eternal.
The Kingdom is eternal.
You are not just working for a company.
You are working alongside God.
Let that change how you show up tomorrow.
Reflection Questions
Do I see my job as temporary or eternally significant?
What seeds am I planting daily?
Am I working mainly for what perishes — or what lasts?
Who at my workplace needs my prayers?
How would I act differently tomorrow if I truly believed my work follows me into eternity?
Closing Thought
You are planted where you are for more than a paycheck.
You are there for eternal purpose.
Work is eternal — live like it.
